Renaissance Program

The attitude of excellence flourishes throughout the Belleville West Campus.  Our commitment to excellence under Renaissance has given recognition to numerous individuals including students, staff, and community members.  The purpose of the Renaissance program is to recognize and reward those students who are achieving academic excellence with tangible incentives and rewards.  This fast growing program has brought honors and recognition for Belleville West High School.

The Renaissance program at Belleville West High School began one year ago to help meet the challenge of a changing student population.  Our goal is to make each student believe he can achieve success in school and become a productive member of our society.  Renaissance involves the merging of our business community with the educational system.  Working together in a commitment to promoting academic excellence will benefit the entire community.

There are a number of incentives for achieving academic excellence through the Renaissance program.  At semester’s end, once a student has qualified in any of the categories listed, he or she can apply for the rewards.  Rewards will be presented as soon as the application is verified.

Belleville West Theatre

The Belleville West Theatre Department stages five productions each school year–the fall play, the freshman-sophomore show, the children’s play, the traveling contest drama, and the spring musical.  That’s five excellent opportunities to perform onstage, to build skills behind the scenes, to meet great new friends, and to make some lasting memories.

Little Theatre is an organization that promotes theatrical events on the Belleville West campus. The group sponsors monthly informational meetings, social events, workshops for actors and technicians, and a spring honors reception.

Lend Me A Tenor

October 14, 15, 16 – 7:00 p.m.

a comedy by Ken Ludwig

This night in September of 1934 is the biggest ever in the history of the Cleveland Opera Company: world famous tenor Tito Merelli is to perform at the gala season opener. Saunders, the company’s general manager, hopes that the great star’s performance will put Cleveland on the operatic map. But through a hilarious series of mishaps, Merelli is unable to perform, and Saunders has less than an hour to find a replacement. By the end of the evening, two opera singers are running around in costume–pursued by adoring female fans, a bellhop anxious for an autograph, and a squadron of policemen. The original production of this delightful comedy won two Tony awards, and the show enjoyed a return to Broadway during the 2010 season.

Crimes of the Heart

crimes_of_the_heart

March 17 – 7:00 p.m.

by Beth Henley

The 2011 Contest Drama is Beth Henley’s Pulitzer Prize winning comic drama. The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing prospects; Meg, the middle sister, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet somehow hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin and by the young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail (while helplessly falling in love with her). In the end, the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future—but the telling is so true and touching and funny that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain goes down.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

dity_rotten_scoundrels

May 5, 6, and 7 – 7:00 p.m.

Book by Jeffrey Lane
Music and Lyrics by David Yazbek

Based on the popular 1988 film, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS centers on two con men living on the French Riviera. The first is the suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson, who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. The other, a small-time crook named Freddy Benson, more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health.

After meeting on a train, they unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn’t big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate, wins and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!

The International Thespian Society

The International Thespian Society is an honor organization founded in 1929 by teachers in West Virginia. Belleville West has been a member of the Thespian Society for over 50 years. In order for a theatre student to achieve the rank of Thespian, he or she must work 300 hours in the West theatre program, and at least 150 of these hours must be in technical work on our stage. The thespian motto is, “Act well your part; there all honor lies.”

Thespian Point System

The following chart shows the maximum number of points that a student may receive for work in different roles (both onstage and backstage) in the theatre program. However, it is important to remember that these numbers are just a guideline. It is the perogative of individual directors to assign fewer points if they are not satisfied with the effort of their students.
